Light bleeding after cat gives birth

by Freddie
(Essex, UK)

Hi, my cat gave birth on monday. The first was at midnight & the second one came out 7 hours later quickly followed by the other 3, so 5 in total. She seems well & is eating like a horse. I have noticed drops of fresh blood around the house, not that many, about 3 & about the size of a 10p. Is this normal?

Thanks.

Hi
firstly let me say congratulations on your new litter, it sounds as if all went well.

i wouldn't worry about the drops of blood at the moment, it is not unusual for a little blood to come out afterwards (this happens in humans too).

keep an eye on them all and see how they get along. If your queen shows any other signs of distress or discomfort then that would be the time for a vet visit. but I'm sure all is well if she is eating and walking around already.

Make sure your queen gets a good nutritional food for her current needs, it can really take it out of a cat having to feed all those mouths. there are special food available for nursing queens (one can be found here https://www.our-happy-cat.com/cat-diet.html

I also have some pages about kitten care which you may also find of further interest here

best wishes Kate
