Answer from KAte
Hi there are two possibilities here. Either he is constipated and having some issues or this is behavioral issue called Middening.

I have a page about both of these issues which will give you more information about both and allow you to try and help your cat. here are the pages

Cat Keeps leaving small poo pieces
by: Sherie

Our cat did this same thing. These small pieces are a problem. Most likely (as Kate said) due to constipation. We took our cat to the vet several times over a period of two years. Unfortunately our vet just gave him enemas. She did an x-ray when this first began and I feel the vet did not consider how bad her constipation issues were. We had to take her to emergency on a weekend. She was so full of feces that she had to have surgery to remove her colon. I would take your cat to the vet before the problem becomes serious. Hope this helps.
