My Blue Persian

by Suzi
(United Kingdom)

My 8 year old blue Persian cat has recently stopped using her litterbox and has started using my mother's expensive persian rug. She goes to the same spot every time. The rug my cat's chosen is in the dining room, right next to the dining table of all places, so we can't keep her litterbox there permanently. I've tried changing the location of her litterbox, tried changing the type of litter (seriously, I've tried them all)to no avail. Any advice?

Thanks,

Suzi

Hi
well first you must clean the rug thoroughly and sprinkle bicarbonate of soda on the rug and leave it for an hour or so to remove any traces of scent.

Then a period of litter re training for your cat may be required, the process is described here on my web page. I also have a web page which gives an explanation for why this behaviour may be happening. I hope it may help to find out why your cat has started this behaviour. Here are the pages

Litterbox problems
by: J.A.

You sweet little cat should be taken to a vet. Very often sudden changes in litter box behaviors can signal health problems. Persians are particularly prone to polycystic kidney disease and similar aliments. I speak from experience. Don't chalk this up to purely behavioral issue..get to a vet.
