My cat has lost a lot of weight, sleeps literally all the time, and is constantly licking himself.

My cat Dennis is about 9 going on 10. He's always been kind of tubby, but I've noticed he's lost a lot of weight recently. My dad said that he barely ate for three weeks. He also sleeps all the time, which i know cats do a lot, but he used to be around the house walking a lot more than he does now. He also is constantly licking himself, and he's lost some fur on his ankles. Do you think he is sick, or just going through a weird phase? We would take him to the doctor's, but we can't afford it. What do you suggest we do and what do you think is wrong? Is this normal in cats?

Answer from Kate

Yes I do think he is sick, if a cat loses a lot of weight and changes his behavior ie becomes less active then these are certain signs of ill health. Also the loss of fur could be to do with the cat not feeling well and so over grooming himself to try and comfort himself.

Also if a cat is off his food for that period of time it also is not a good sign and as you know he really does need to see a vet sooner rather than later.

Speak to your vet to see if he has any payment plans you can use or if there are any charities in the area which may be able to help.

I do hope you are able to get him to a vet soon.

best wishes Kate
