My cat is making strange noises

by Julia
(Australia)

Hi,

My 12 year old female cat (desexed) has recently started making moaning noises quietly to herself when sitting next to me curled up in her usual positions. It kind of sounds like she is in pain, but i cant think of anything other than food that she may have eaten which could give her pain. Although when i pat her stomach she is ok with it. She has no symptoms of hurting some part of her body. She has been drinking more water than normal.

I ususally feed her fish that i broil. And she eats dried food and occasionally other pieces of fish (recently prawn heads) or chicken or cheese or milk (very occasionally).

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thankyou,

Julia

Hi Julia

Without hearing the noises for myself it is difficult to say what they could be. Are you sure she is not not purring very quietly to herself?

The other possibility is that some thing has become stuck in her throat perhaps a very small bone. However a vet would need to take a look to see if he could see nay thing.

As cats get older things can start to go wrong (like all of us) and it is always a good idea to have them checked by a vet at least once a year but if anything new happens such as this new noise then a check up is also a good idea.

Hope she is Ok
