my cat is reacting to my boyfriends absence

by Shay

My boyfriend left a week ago for basic training, so he will be out of the house for 2 months. We lived together and him and our cat were together all day everyday. Now that he is gone, she is pooping and smearing it everywhere, and has peed on my furniture twice. What do I do to make it stop?

Hi
Well cats don't always react well to changes in routine and situations, so the recent changes in your home could certainly trigger some insecurity behaviour.

Basically the cat is trying t make her home smell more like her which helps her to feel safe and confident again.

I would suggest a period of litter re training using the confinement method. This will give her some time to build confidence in a smaller area and to also become re acquainted again with her litter tray. the process is described here

Also make sure that your cat has lots of new and interesting things to keep her distracted and stimulated, this will help her through this period of change.

Here is a page with some ideas

best wishes Kate
