Hi
well night time is the normal time for a cat to be alert and this can mean making loud cries to communicate with other cats in the area.

You didn't mention how old he was. he is getting on then the sudden crying at night can be age related. please see this page for more information

If he is not old then it could be that a new cat has come into the area and your cat can smell him and is yowling to let the other cat know this is his territory.

I always recommend that when a cats behavior changes suddenly to have them checked by a vet just in case the new behavior has been caused by an underlying illness.

best wishes Kate
