new mother cat eating her own poo

by carley cole

hi my cat is a year and a half, she had 5 kittens 5 weeks ago they all seem very healthy but am concerned about there mum, she has black patches around her nipples that were not there before and her fur on her belly has considerably thinned and now has started eating her poo she had and accident on the kitchen floor and was eating it up should i be concerned of this?

This is outside my expertise i am afraid as i have not come across this before. It may simply be that the kittens suckling may have caused the fur to thin and her nipples to scar up a little.

However i have not seen a cat eat her own feces before so all i can say is that this may be a deficiency issue caused by all the effort to feed her kittens etc. It can take it out of a cat and if they are not getting all the nutrients they need may cause strange eating patterns. Your best option is to have her looked at by a vet to see if he feels that she may need some extra nutrients etc to help her while she is nursing her kittens.

best wishes kate
