Patty - matted fur

Our cat has always had matted fur on the back and side. Big ugly clumps that will not go away. I have cut them off and they grow back the same way. What is this. What causes this. Is there a cure?

Hi this is common in cats with long fur. It is caused when lose fur becomes matted togeather with general every day grit and dirt. The only way to prevent it is to brush the fur every day if possible to get rid of debris caught in the fur and to remove loose fur. It also helps to prevent fur balls in your cat.
Matted fur can be painful for a cat as thier skin is very delicate and the mat palls at the skin, it is also quite painful when the fur is cut away so preventing it in the first place is the best answer.
