we have 2 lounges in our house (1 for the guests and 1 for using daily)We have decided that we will put the litter tray in the lounge we use daily (which isnt close to traffic or other noices). But we're stucl on where to put the scratching post. can it be near the litter tray? Or should I put it in my room (where the cat sleeps in her basket or on my bed)?

The scratching post can be anywhere really. Generally scratching posts are not placed right next to the litter tray though.

Placing it near his bed area may be a good idea as this is where he relaxes.

best wishes kate
