Whats wrong with my kitten?

by Eliana R.

My kitten is about 5 week old she was an outside cat for about a week but my family and i have decided to keep her as an inside cat,we have had her inside for about 2 weeks,my brother takes care of her we always give her a full can of fancy feast or half and she has plenty of water, but now she has been acting strange, she is having trouble getting up,her stomach is distended, and her anus is swollen and she cant fully go to the restroom because her stool is at least half way out and my mom had to pull it out and we saw that it hurt her. Please help me.

Hi
At 5 weeks she is very young indeed and is way to young to be on solid food. In nature kittens are not normally weaned until they are around 8 weeks old and even then it will take several weeks to fully wean them onto solid food.

This is why she is having tummy problems, the food is just too rich for her insides. You need to feed her proper kitten milk only as cats are allergic to cows milk they are intolerant to the lactose in it.

I would stop giving her the canned food straight away and make sure she gets plenty of fluids along with her cat milk, hopefully after a day or so her tummy will settle down and she will be ok again, if not then she will need to see a vet urgently.

best wishes Kate
